no article made me more upset this week than this one: an op-ed in the LA times detailing the scary reality that “women serving in the U.S. military are more likely to be raped by a fellow soldier than killed by enemy fire in Iraq.”

minnesotans want comprehensive sex education in our schools, so why the hell aren’t legislators doing anything about it? i’m mean, even addison montgomery gets it, teaching abstinence-only doesn’t freaking working!!

male violence against women often front page news, especially if the chick is like, ya know, hot. if you’re an anglophile like me you’ve noticed the constant barrage of stories on the cover of bbc news detailing the high profile murders of woman after woman after woman. i’m often upset by the misogyny of the ways in which women are repeatedly blamed for male violence , and yet i’d never heard of the word femicide until i read this.

one of my favorite books will always be the second shift, and the good ol researchers over at the university of michigain must like it too because they’ve done some studies (click on “time, money, and who does the laundry” to open a short pdf on the topic.) “the amount of housework men do has also changed. instead of doing about 3.5 hours a week, they’re now up to about 7 hours a week. but that’s still less than a third of the time working women spend.” iron my shirts!!

I just got done reading this article and am still trying to digest it, but I’m curious if anyone has any thoughts/comments/critiques. As the daughter of a prison guard, criticizing the prison-industrial complex truly is biting the hand that feeds/fed me, but I think it’s vitally important to identify and dismantle the ways that system upholds white privilege and, often, blatant racism. How can white feminists be a part of this struggle and the struggle to ensure just, safe immigration experiences– instead of buying into the assimilationist power and privilege that Hoffman claims we hide behind– in intentional, compassionate, non-condescending ways?

yesss, the most kick-ass article of the week! a boy plays a flute? huzzahwhaaaa? a girl plays the tuba? bahhhh? why don’t girls play guitar? discusses how we genderize musical instruments and how, seriously, come on now, that’s ridiculous.
this is a question for the men out there… when society uses gender stereotypes against you, such as these (albeit fake) manly jelly bean flavors, does it bother you too?

In the second half of the hour of World, Have Your Say today was about whether or not women are taken seriously in politics. It was at times really interesting, really appalling, and depressing. Talked about Sylvio Berlusconi, Chris Matthews, and some other stuff. If you have a half hour, check it out.
